Presentation About GCRI At Climate-Friendly Climate Research Conference

A quick fyi, I’ll be presenting about GCRI at the upcoming Climate-Friendly Climate Research conference (11-15 November), hosted by Klimaforschungsnetzwerk Österreich/Climate Change Centre Austria. The conference is of note because it’s being held 100% online. It’s thus “climate friendly” because it avoids the considerable greenhouse gas emissions associated with the travel required for in-person conferences. I think it’s a great idea. New Paper: Ethics & Dual-Use Bioengineering

GCRI has a new academic paper out. The ethics of global catastrophic risk from dual-use bioengineering, by Seth Baum and Grant Wilson, has been accepted for publication in Ethics in Biology, Engineering and Medicine. The paper was written for a talk of the same title presented at the 7th Annual International Conference on Ethical Issues In Biomedical Engineering.

Baum To Moderate Megadisasters Panel At AGU Science Policy Conference

GCRI Executive Director Seth Baum has been invited to moderate a panel discussion Potential for Megadisasters at the 2013 American Geophysical Union Science Policy Conference, which will take place in Washington, DC.

Panelists will include Lindley Johnson, Executive of the NASA Near Earth Objects Observations Program; Lucile Jones, Science Advisor for Risk Reduction of the U.S. Geological Survey’s SAFRR Project (Science Application for Risk Reduction); Lawrence Zanetti, Physicist at the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab; and Eddie Bernard, Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington.

New Paper: Global Catastrophe Adaptation and Recovery

GCRI has a new academic paper out. Adaptation to and Recovery from Global Catastrophe, by Tim Maher and Seth Baum, has been accepted for publication in Sustainability. (Click here for a nontechnical summary.) This paper analyzes the possibility that survivors may adapt to post-catastrophe conditions, recover civilization, and perhaps even go on to colonize space. The paper considers both the importance of adaptation/recovery and how adaptation/recovery may proceed.
