I am delighted to announce a new member of the GCRI team, Research Associate Andrea Owe. Andrea is an environmental and space ethicist based in Oslo. She first started working with GCRI a few years ago while she was a masters student at the University of Oslo’s Centre for Development and the Environment. In Memory of John Garrick

Late last year, the field of risk analysis lost a pioneer and longtime leader, B. John Garrick. Garrick helped develop the field, first in the nuclear power industry and then later across a wide range of other domains, including global catastrophic risk. He was also a colleague and a friend of GCRI, who contributed to our work as one of our senior advisors. He will be dearly missed by many, including all of us at GCRI.

Would the world be safer with or without nuclear weapons? On one hand, nuclear weapons may increase the severity of war due to their extreme explosive power. On the other hand, they may decrease the frequency of major wars by strengthening deterrence. Is the decrease in frequency enough to offset the increase in severity?
