GCRI Statement on the Demographic Diversity of the GCRI Team, January 2023

Over the past month, GCRI has lost two team members: Deputy Director McKenna Fitzgerald and Research Associate Andrea Owe. As a consequence, the current GCRI team consists exclusively of White males from very similar backgrounds.

We wish to state for the record that we are aware of our current lack of demographic diversity and we are not happy about it. We believe that demographic diversity is important for a multitude of reasons, including to benefit the GCRI team from the infusion of different and complementary perspectives, to ensure that talented people from all demographic groups have good opportunities in the field of global catastrophic risk, and to show people from underrepresented demographic groups that they too have a place in the field.

GCRI is committed to advancing demographic diversity within our own team and in the broader field of global catastrophic risk. Though we are not hiring at this time, if and when we are, we will go out of our way to recruit from underrepresented demographic groups. We will additionally support people from underrepresented demographic groups through our Advising and Collaboration Program and related activities. We will also continue to speak out in support of demographic diversity and inclusivity, as we already have in our Statement on Racism and our Statement on Pluralism in the Field of Global Catastrophic Risk.

Sincerely,

Seth Baum, Executive Director
Tony Barrett, Director of Research
